Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public about the potential for a dangerous rise in sexual dysfunction (ED) and other sexual problems, particularly when taken during sexual activity, which could lead to death and serious consequences.
The FDA says it was aware of an increased incidence of ED and other sexual problems in men taking the popular anti-impotence drug Viagra in December 2013.
However, the agency warned that more serious concerns would appear if men taking the drug were also taking Viagra.

In the U. S., it is not unusual to see Viagra being sold by different manufacturers. Viagra and its generic version, called sildenafil, are sold under different brand names.
Viagra is known as a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. The drug is approved for the treatment of erection problems in men aged 18 and older. A study of men who had been taking sildenafil for more than six months found that men who used the drug had a greater risk of suffering from ED.

However, a study of men who had taken sildenafil for six months found that the risk of ED was still present even after a maximum of four hours of treatment. The study found that the risk of ED continued after four hours. The researchers also found that men who had taken Viagra for more than six months did not have a higher risk of serious complications from ED.
The FDA also warned that men taking sildenafil may experience side effects like facial flushing, nausea, dizziness, and headaches.
Viagra has been the subject of multiple reports of fatal heart problems.

The drug, which has a long list of side effects including vision impairment, headache, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach upset, was not approved for use by the FDA for sale in the United States until November, according to the FDA's official announcement.
The agency will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the drug for patients who have taken the drug for a long time or are taking it for another reason, the FDA announced.
Viagra is a generic version of Viagra and is a non-prescription drug. It is sold by Pfizer Inc. and is available for purchase on the Internet without a prescription from a physician.
In an email, Pfizer Inc. said the company would continue to review the drug's efficacy and safety for patients taking sildenafil for at least a year or longer. It did not say whether the drug could be used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer also said it will conduct clinical trials of sildenafil to determine its suitability for the approved uses.
The FDA's announcement follows the Food and Drug Administration's approval of a similar drug, Viagra Connect, which has been approved for use in the United States for more than two years. However, the approval did not go into effect until November 2023.
